Scuba Diving in Nicaragua

Nicaragua may not be the first place you think of for scuba diving, and that may be the reason why the diving spots in this country are some of the best in Central America – they are still relatively undiscovered by major tourism. Nicaragua offers some very interesting dive locations and those who dive in these areas will find themselves surrounded by abundant underwater life, instead of jet skis and the hustle and bustle of tourist activities.

When you submerge yourself, you will join an underwater paradise teeming with life in pristine, undeveloped conditions.

The most popular dive regions in Nicaragua are Big Corn Island, Little Corn Island, the volcanic lakes (Apoyo and Xiloá) and San Juan del Sur.

Big Corn Island & Little Corn Island

Most divers consider these islands the best diving in Nicaragua. The “White Holes”, patches of white sand off the Little Corn Island, are great places to spot Hammerhead Sharks, Eagle Rays and countless other species. There are also interesting rock formations that allow divers to admire the coral along with all of the wildlife that live in the nooks and crannies.

The Volcanic Lakes

Beginner divers will enjoy the opportunity to experience the underwater life in these lakes. The lakes are close to Managua, so dives can be combined with a number of other activities in the area.

San Juan del Sur

Off the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur offers divers a rare glimpse of a sunken ship along with Manta Rays, Dolphins, Lobsters and more. There is a cluster of islets off the coast where numerous fish can be spotted. The coral reefs that grow around these islets offer a desirable home to a variety of species.
